Welcome to the Yealmpton Parish Archive
Who are we? Anida Rayfield, Marianne Millin, Sheila Barton Tommy and Gill Taylor
Yealmpton Parish Archive officially opened in March 2025 after a year of sorting and cataloguing documents donated by Chris Burtt, an enthusiastic local historian and former resident of the village.
The Archive can be found upstairs in the Yealmpton Community Centre, Stray Park, Yealmpton, PL82HF.
The Archive is open on Fridays: 10:00 – 12:30
The aims of the archive are:
- To develop an archive that reflects aspects of life within the parish of Yealmpton, both in the past and present;
- To protect and conserve documents, photographs and artifacts relating to the history of the parish;
- To research and collect further evidence relating to the life of the parish, both past and present;
- To engage with persons of all ages to inform and foster a sense of history and place;
- To encourage curiosity and enjoy the process of discovery.
What do we do within the community?
- Write regular articles for the Yealmpton Press to highlight aspects of Yealmpton history;
- Help the Brownies with their Local History Badge
- Provide pop-up displays for events such as coffee mornings and school fairs
Yealmpton Agricultural Show – Always the last Wednesday in July
We are delighted that this year, 2026, Yealmpton Parish Archive has taken over responsibility for the History Marquee.
- Revisit the iconic National Shire Horse Centre through display boards and picture stories – perhaps you’ll see yourself! Chat with Diana Flower who ran it with the husband, Tony.
- Can you write a new verse for the Old Mother Hubbard’s poem written at nearby Kitley House?
- Help us put names to faces – we have photographs of people, but don’t know who they are!
- Learn about the Yealmpton Fire Brigade.
- Who was Jack Hollow and what did he do?
- The railway that never was – the branch line to Newton Ferrers.
